Quick answer
No single material is best for every kitchen: aluminium resists water and humidity best, HPL is the toughest against scratches and heat, acrylic gives the best high-gloss look, and wood or moisture-resistant MDF offer the most design freedom. Choose by where the kitchen is, how it's used and your budget.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF (usually green-core) is the base of most modern kitchens. Its smooth surface takes paint, lacquer, acrylic and wood veneer, and it is more stable than solid wood when temperatures change. Its weak point is direct, repeated water exposure, so edges must be sealed well — especially around the sink.
Solid wood
Solid wood looks warm and premium, suits classic kitchens and can be sanded and refinished. But it costs more, expands and contracts with humidity and high heat, and needs regular care.
Aluminium
Aluminium kitchens are unaffected by water, humidity and insects, which suits annexe kitchens, outdoor kitchens and very humid spaces. They offer fewer finishes and design options than wood or MDF and can feel less warm.
Acrylic
Acrylic is a very high-gloss layer bonded to MDF boards. It gives a modern mirror-like look, is easy to clean and — in good quality — doesn't yellow over time. It shows fingerprints and fine scratches more than matt finishes.
HPL (high-pressure laminate)
HPL is a dense pressed laminate and one of the most resistant materials to scratches, heat and knocks. It comes in matt colours and wood- or stone-like textures and suits families and heavy daily use.
Lacquer (painted)
Lacquer is a multi-coat paint finish on MDF, matt or gloss, in almost any colour. It is very attractive but chips more easily than HPL when knocked and needs care when cleaning.
Which should you choose?
For the main kitchen inside the house: moisture-resistant MDF finished in HPL, acrylic or lacquer, to taste. For an annexe or outdoor kitchen: aluminium. For a premium classic look: wood or MDF with classic fronts. In every case, hardware quality (hinges, drawers) and well-sealed edges matter more than the front material alone.
Frequently asked questions
Which kitchen material is best for humidity?
Aluminium is the most humidity- and water-resistant, followed by moisture-resistant MDF with properly sealed edges.
Does acrylic scratch?
Gloss acrylic shows fine scratches and fingerprints more than matt finishes, but it is easy to clean and can be polished.
